What We Gain from Loss

This week Pastor Benjamin introduces the backyard trellis and talks about the simple lattice that creates a sturdy and dependable scaffolding for vine sustainability. A vine thrusts out new shoots and winds up, across, over fences as Spring approaches.  Some pruning is needed now and then. The vine also needs weeding around the base, and protection from caterpillars feasting on green leaves. At times it can be hard to see the condition of the trellis under the vines.

Leviticus 25:3-4

Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its crop, but during the seventh year the land shall have a sabbath rest, a sabbath to the Lord; you shall not sow your field nor prune your vineyard.

Our church is a combination of trellis and vine.  According to Marshall and Payne (2009), “The basic work of Christian ministry is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ in the power of God’s Spirit and to see people converted, changed, and growing to maturity in the gospel.  That’s the work of planting, watering, fertilizing, and tending the vine”(p.8). Some framework is needed to help a vine grow, so Christian ministries need structure and support. This can be Bibles to read from, places to meet, and basic leadership.  This infrastructure, financial oversight, and management are like a trellis and it needs to be strong as the vine grows, however, it’s maintenance cannot take over the growing of the vine, which will produce fruit. We, as Christians, are the vinedressers.

As the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to flatten, we must gradually and carefully work together to protect each other. Remain connected to the vine, which is Christ. Reach toward the Son to grow. Lean on the trellis and other believers for support. Provide support for others who need to trace their connection to the True Vine. The back yard trellis may need maintenance.  Its simplicity provides a dependable scaffold. The vine is unconventional and unorthodox.  Without pruning, weeding, and protection it will not produce fruit. We inspect and repair the trellis as needed.
