JANUARY MISSIONARY FOCUS
Heart Reach Neighborhood Ministries is based in Youngstown, OH and operates several neighborhood centers. They also manage a food distribution program with sites throughout Mahoning County. Last summer the agency served over 1,000 meals a day. They have a paid staff of 5
(3 full-time, 2 part-time) and are able to operate effectively with the help of volunteers. Combined, the work force numbers close to 100 people, all using their gifts and abilities to bless and serve others. Financial support includes the American Baptist Home Mission Societies, United Way, local foundations and hundreds of individuals and families.
Neighborhood Ministries began as a part of the settlement house movement in the early 19th century. The pastor of a church in Campbell, Ohio wanted to have Bible studies for immigrants who had come to the area to work in the steel mills. Many of the immigrants did not speak English, so the ministry included English classes. Over the years the ministry developed and changed, starting with Bethel House I, followed by Bethel House II. Later the ministry name changed to Campbell Christian Center and expanded to two sites in Campbell, Bethel House and the Neighborhood House.
In 1967, a housing development was built in Campbell and the ministry, then named Neighborhood Ministries, began outreach to families moving into the development. As programs and funding grew, a second center was started in 1984 in the community center of a second housing development on the east side of Youngstown, Ohio. In 2003 a third center was started as a job training and outreach site on the south side of Youngstown. A fourth center was added in 2009 in partnership with West Side Baptist Church in Youngstown, Ohio and Calvary Baptist Church in Boardman, Ohio
The latest change has been the merger with Heart Reach Ministries in 2017. With this merger the agencies will both be able to better serve the existing children and families. They will have a larger staff with a greater variety of expertise, gifts and talents. They will be able to share resources to strengthen both children’s and adults’ programs and family assistance. And there will be ministry sites on all sides of town and in schools, providing greater access to the communities where the need is greatest.
Over the years the ministry has changed names and acquired locations, but the purpose has been the same: to share the love of Christ with children and families living in challenging neighborhoods and situations.
